Beginner Music Programmes

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2010! In ‘Term One’ we incorporated the following themes: Summer Fun, Teddies, Irish Music and Easter.

The Summer Fun theme was a great opportunity to use natural rescources for music making, e.g. shells, stones and driftwood. As well as conventional instruments, we like to encourage creativity and to show how everyday, easily accessible items can be used to create a surprisingly wide range of sounds.

Teddies were popular as always and the Irish Music theme (planned to coincide with St Patrick’s Day) introduced music from another culture with its own distinct characteristics. Children loved playing the beautiful big Bodhran drum. We particularly enjoy this activity as it gives the children a chance to lead the beat and play their own way.

For Term Two our themes are: Autumn, Bears and Squirrels (hibernating animals), and Windmills. (The full Term Two programme outline and songwords will be emailed to you).

When your child brings a toy for the Peek-a-boo basket (2.5 - 4 yr class only), please encourage them to bring an item related to the current theme.
Your Tutor
We all love having Meryl Main on the team. Meryl takes the Wednesday morning Singing Rainbows classes at St Lukes Community Centre, Remuera. Children who attend these classes are treated to Meryl’s ukulele and beautiful violin playing! Visit Our Team to find out more about Sally Sketcher, Meryl Main and our other Singing Rainbows and Lewis Eady Music tutors.
Why We Do What We Do
Stories - sometimes people ask what place stories have in a music programme…
Stories are a great opportunity to teach musical skills including pitch, tempo, dynamics and rhythm. During Singing Rainbows storytime the text, or part of it, is often sung instead of read. You might like to try this with your child’s favourite story at home - pick a simple melody you are familiar with, and use it to “sing ” the text in the story. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Storytime in our programme is also a time for the children to settle down in preparation for the lullaby and closing goodbye song. You can help during storytime be sitting close to your child, joining in (when applicable), and showing your interest in the story.

Beginner Music Programmes
On Saturdays at Lewis Eady Music School, we offer our instrumental prep course Musical Jam for 5 & 6 year olds, and our test-drive of three instruments - Blast-off Junior for 7 year olds and Blast-off Senior for 8+ year olds. Instruments offered in each programme are age appropriate. Blast-off allows your child to make their own decision about which instrument they wish to learn resulting in self-motivation to play and practice regularly.
